Trails Utah long advocated for improving the Mormon Pioneer Trail where it begins at Little Dell Reservoir and Recreation Area and climbs up to Big Mountain Pass on the border of Salt Lake and Morgan Counties. This historic stretch of trail, open to mountain biking, needed several reroutes as well as subtle turns and grade reversals to shed channeling water along straight-away sections.
In 2017, after several years of project planning and stakeholder development, Salt Lake City Watershed agreed to permit improvements to the first five-mile stretch and secured a grant from the State Parks Recreational Trails Program. SLC Watershed matched the grant monies for which we are enormously grateful. Trails Utah is continuing to develop plans to treat the upper section of this trail on USFS land.
